The Boston Comics Roundtable, of which I am a member, has just released the first issue of its new anthology, Inbound. We debuted at MoCCA, where it sold very well, and the first issue is now available for online purchase. Lending Can Openers, my collaboration with Steve Harrison, appears in this issue, along with another short piece Steve and I did, which has not been published online. Plus, lots of other cool folks. See below for full details.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INBOUND #1 PUTS BOSTON COMICS ON THE MAP
Boston Comics Roundtable releases its first anthology

BOSTON, MA (JUNE 10, 2008) – The Boston Comics Roundtable is pleased to announce the release of its premiere publication, Inbound, a Boston Comics Anthology (#1). The 60-page book, the first of many installments to come, contains seven comics from Boston artists. Inbound #1 retails for $7.95 and will be available in retail locations throughout the Boston area and online at www.bostoncomicsroundtable.com.

The Boston Comics Roundtable (BCR) is the only organization of its kind in Boston. It was created in 2006 to unite Boston-based comics creators in the spirit of camaraderie and professional development. With a strong grassroots sprit, the group focuses on promoting local talent and supporting local business. Growing steadily since its inception, the group now includes about 25 artists and writers, with roots in both print and web comics.

Inbound #1 contains several stories from a number of creative individuals and writer/ artist teams, including Alexander Danner (author of Character Design for Graphic Novels) and a beautiful full-color cover from Shelli Paroline. The contents includes:

• Lending Can Openers – Alexander Danner (writer) and Steve Harrison (artist)
• The Ragbox, Ch. 1 – Dave Kender (writer) and Mark Hamilton (artist)
• After the Plague – Ryan Wheeler (writer) and Braden Lamb (artist)

Fans should expect issue #2 and #3 in the late summer and fall of this year. Issue #1 of Inbound is available now.

The Boston Comics Roundtable is an independent organization of comics creators in the Greater Boston area. The group meets weekly for workshopping, teaching, and social gathering. Meetings are open to the public. If you do come, don’t be surprised if the building doesn’t look like a theatre. The address is clearly marked on the outside, but the name of the studio isn’t. Just go on in and head up to the second floor, where there are a pair of tiny black box theatres. I’ll be in one of those.

My play Parens. has been selected for a public reading as part of the City Attic Theatre’s C.A.T. Tales new play festival! This is the second time I’ve worked with this company — Cubicles was included in their first C.A.T. Tales festival a couple of years ago, and I had a great time working with them. If you’re in NY, I hope you’ll consider coming out. I’m not sure what the ticket price will be, but probably not much. I’ll update with more info as soon as I know more.

Parens. will be read on Saturday the 14th (the weekend after MoCCA) at 7 p.m. at Stella Adler Studios, 31 W. 27th St., 2nd Floor.

Grug, of course, is also currently illustrating my story “Bring Your Daughter to Work Day.” Love Puppets is a very cute romance/dating comic, centered, oddly enough, around a bunch of hand puppets.

I haven’t done a projects update in a long time, mainly because there haven’t been any projects to keep folks updated on. As I may have mentioned, I started teaching this past September. And one teaching job quickly snowballed into four teaching jobs, plus occasional speaking engagements. Which is great—I love the work I’m doing now. I love teaching, I love speaking to audiences, and I’m always happy to be in a classroom, regardless of which side of the big desk I’m on.

But, I’m discovering that teaching does eat away at my creative energy, not to mention my time.

The good news, though, is I’m cutting back on my teaching schedule for the summer, so I can make some progress on writing projects again. Here’s what I have coming up:

First, of course, is Bring Your Daughter to Work Day, illustrated by Edward J. Grug III. This one is already running and is about half done. I’m very please with how this one is turning out, and hope to have some print minis available at MoCCA.

Also at MoCCA will be the first issue of Inbound, the anthology of The Boston Comics Roundtable, which will include Lending Can Openers, the story I did with Steve Harrison. Also included will be “What I Learned from the Executive Bathroom,” a new one-pager also illustrated by Steve. (Of course, the anthology comics by a lot of other awesome people as well. You should check it out.)

Next up should be Uncertainty, illustrated by Tym Godek. This is another sizable story that I’m really excited about, especially since I’ve wanted to work with Tym for a long time. This will probably begin regular updates sometime in the next couple of months.

I have a couple of other short stories that I placed with artists a while ago, but haven’t heard any updates in a while. I’ll need to check up on those.

I’m now working on my first new script in a while—a 4-5 pager which will most likely be illustrated by my friend Dan Mazur. It’s another office story, but this one prominently features underwear.

Most of the above mentioned stories fit that office theme. My goal, once they are all completed, is to collect them, along with Discovery of Spoons and Mug, into a print collection. The fool in me hopes to have this done in time for SPX. That probably won’t happen. But it will definitely happen in the next year. After that, I’m getting off the office theme. I’ve pretty much run that horse as far as I can, and it’s time to do something else.

I also need to get back on track with articles for Webcomics.com. And I had an idea for a new column for Comixtalk as well, time permitting.

After that, things get more difficult. I have no shortage of ideas right now, but I’m having a hard time deciding which project should come first.

For those folks who have mentioned having difficulty following a comic published via Livejournal, here are some direct links to the pages that have gone up so far:

Pages 1&2
Pages 3 & 4
Page 7

And once the story is wrapped up, the whole thing will be archived in standard linear fashion at my own comics site, so if Livejournal isn’t for you, don’t fret–another layout is coming.

In the meantime, I have to say, I’m really enjoying the response the story has been getting! Grug has some really fun and engaged fans, and their enthusiasm for the story right from the start has been a pleasure to see!
